
BY MARCY SHORTUSE - With a bloom of red tide aggravating the nostrils and lungs of many islanders, there is a researcher braving the stench and dead fish. It’s easy for him to freely move through the mess, but that’s because He is a robot. A robot named Waldo. And he is a BreveBuster.
Mote Marine Laboratory has been deploying Waldo in local waters this week to detect karenia brevis (red tide), and to give scientists accurate readings as to how much of the algae is in the Gulf.
Waldo floats from waters offshore of Englewood south to Boca Grande Pass.
