BY LIZA STROUT - There may not have been lines of voters stretching out the doors of the Boca Grande Community Center, but for the volunteers manning the polls, it was a success.

“Everything went very smoothly,” said Lew Hastings, executive director of the Boca Grande Chamber of Commerce and primary day volunteer. “I was part of a crew that helped 76 island voters cast their ballots,” he said.

While that may seem like a small number, it does not include absentee and early voting ballots, which Hastings estimated to number around 275.

“It was a slow day,” said Hastings. “But it is midsummer, so we were expecting that. I only hope things run as smoothly for us at the general election in November.”

Florida has a closed primary, so a voter can only cast a ballot for members of their own party and in non partisan races.
