Beacon brings home awards

The Boca Beacon crew were nominated for seven categories and received eight prizes.

Editor Marcy Shortuse took first place for her photos that accompanied her feature story, “Much Ado about Ospreys.”

One of the judges commented, “Amazing … Who wouldn’t want to read this story after seeing these photos!”

Shortuse also shared a first place prize with Richard Hirsch for his editorial, “PTTS: Doing more harm than jigging.”

In the Arts and Entertainment & Review Report category, the Beacon staff won second prize for the review, “RPP season opener plays to a standing ovation: Vincent.”

Shortuse, owner Dusty Hopkins and Art Director Daniel Godwin shared the second place trophy for their photo coverage of Ladies Day 2011.

In Agricultural and Environmental reporting, Shortuse won second place for her entry, “Coyotes make presence known on Boca Beaches.”

She also received a second place prize for Best Obituary, for “Islanders say good-bye to Mona Amen: A chef, a friend, a mother and one classy lady who will be missed.”

Delores Savas took third in Agricultural and Environmental for her article, “No soup for you … at least not shark fin soup.”

Finally, Shortuse also won a third place Editorial Award for her piece on the demolition of her former home, “It’s gone from 12th Street, but will still live on.”
