GITT Classic: A tale of age triumphing over youth

As the 3rd Annual Gasparilla Island Tennis entered its second and final week, there were a few surprises.

Ingrid Yonkers and Doris Richards, partners in the ladies’ mixed doubles, pulled off a victory after an exciting and grueling match against Kristin Levanovich and Susannah Coe.

“It was an amazing match, and I can’t believe that age prevailed, but it did after two-and-a-half hours,” said Yonkers.

Tournament sponsor and Boca Beacon owner Dusty Hopkins partnered with Dick Ryan for the men’s open doubles. They were soundly defeated by the team of John Martin and David Maxwell.
Ouch.

In an unfortunate turn of events, what was sure to be a great match in the 70+ men’s doubles final was not completed. John Martin, who was partnered with David Maxwell in both the men’s 70+ and men’s open, injured his knee before the game and had to withdraw from the match.View More images >>

According to Dusty Hopkins, “Even with the time being changed, nearly 100 people showed up to see the men’s open doubles final.”

The attendees watched an epic two hour and fifteen minute match. The team of Steve Bernsten and Phillip Hubbard won in three sets against Chuck Hemm and Tim Dumas.

Mark Horan, tennis pro at the Gasparilla Inn and host of several of the matches, was very happy with the community response to the tournament.

“It was great to have so much participation,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity for people to play each other who normally wouldn’t meet. I’d like to thank Dusty for sponsoring the tournament, and everyone involved for their hard work.”

Speaking of next year, Dusty said, “We’re on for next year, with a bigger and better format, and an opening cocktail party.”
