Gasparilla Island’s annual Toys for Tots drive got a big boost the other day.
When Everett Wray and Joyce King, owners of the Anchor Inn and Boca Buggies, heard about the drive this year, they took enough toys to the collection point at The Island School to fill two boxes. They bought the toys last year after Christmas, and held on to them until the right moment.
Toys for Tots, a charity founded by the Marines in 1947, collects new, unopened toys for children each year during the Christmas season. This year the collection spots on the island are the school, the Loose Caboose, and the Chamber of Commerce. They will be collecting until Thursday, Dec. 15. You can also donate year-round on their website, toysfortots.org.
Over the last 62 years the program has given more than 400 million toys to more than 188 million needy children in the United States.
