Good news regarding the island’s red tide episode: It appears as though it has somewhat abated.
With recent heavy rains and the smell of dead fish, outdoor conditions are not exactly what the Chamber of Commerce considers ideal, but with the winds coming from the southeast early in the week, much of the red tide was blown away from our beaches.
However, as a mild cold front moved our way this week, the winds shifted and the prevailing winds are now coming from the north-northeast, and that’s not pleasant news for most of us. Although the forecasters predict a pleasant weekend and start of the week, the effects of red tide may keep us indoors. The strong winds from a northerly direction can bring more dead fish onto our beaches and cause respiratory issues for some.
On a lighter note, there is some good news: Lobster meat, crab, shrimp, and most finfish are safe to eat from affected waters. Yes, you can gluttonously enjoy delicious stone crab claws and Gulf shrimp from our local fishermen. Scientists do recommend keeping away from some of our local shellfish, including clams, oysters, mussels and scallops because they are filter feeders.
But if it’s a dinner invitation to be spoken of, stone crab claws will do just fine.
