Bike Parade and Spring Fair, Green Gala top this weekend’s activities

This weekend is a culmination of seasonal events, as the Bike Parade and Spring Fair roll into town, the Green Gala will be jumping art will be in bloom and jazz on the green will be playing.

The Boca Grande Art Center will hold their annual “Art in Bloom” show from Friday, March 18 through Sunday March 20. Show times are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Banyan Street Art Center, located at the corner of Park Avenue and Banyan Street.

Italiano Insurance and Nat Italiano sponsor the show.

The 20th Annual Green Gala, themed “Under The Sea,” will be held on Friday, March 18 at 6 p.m. at the Boca Bay Pass Club. It is sold out. Registration begins at 6 p.m., as does the buffet dinner and silent auction. The live auction and surprise entertainment will begin at 7:30 p.m. and dessert and dancing will start at 8:30 p.m.

Mosaic, BIPS, the Florida Park Service and Boca Grande Real Estate sponsor the event.

On Saturday, March 19 be on the Bike Path at 5th Street at 9:30 a.m. to register your float in the annual Bike Parade. This year’s theme for the parade, as well as the Spring Fair to follow, is “Grande Games.” The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will wind down the Bike Path and end at the Boca Grande Community Center at 11 a.m. Entries allowed in the parade can be on foot, on bicycles or scooters, on electric golf carts, even by horseback. No gas-powered vehicles are allowed on the Bike Path or in the parade.

Prizes will be given in several categories, including individual, commercial, family and non-profit.

At 11 a.m. the Boca Grande Woman’s Club Spring Fair will begin on the grounds of the Community Center. A bake sale and other concessions will be available, as well as balloon animal sculptures, caricatures, performances by Checkers the Juggling Clown, face painting, pony rides and a dunk tank.

Manning the dunk tank this year will be Gasparilla Inn & Club General Manager Jon Reecher, Boca Grande Firefighters Dean Esposito and Patrick O’Connor, Island School teacher J.T. Tremaine, PJ’s Seagrille owner Kathleen Turner, golf pro Andy Bell, business owner Aaron Diaz and island resident Angela Steffan. Everyone will getfour throws for $5.

The Mote Marine Laboratory hands-on mobile display will be at the fair as well, and Suncoast Humane Society therapy dogs will also be on hand.

On Sunday, March 20 Friends of the Boca Grande Community Center will sponsor a free concert on the green with the Helios Jazz Orchestra, featuring Lorri Hafer.

Limited seating and space will be available to park golf carts, have a picnic or tailgate, but you have to get there early.

In the event of rain, the concert will be cancelled. Friends of the Boca Grande Community Center and Northern Trust sponsor it.

On Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20, the Placida Rotary Seafood Festival will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on the grounds of The Fishery, 13000 Fishery Road. Seafood, arts and crafts, live music and crab races will be featured at the event. Entry is free, parking cost is $3.
