FWC releases findings in Bull Bay accident Friday, 24 May 2013 10:17  The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission has completed its report on the two-boat accident in Bull Bay on April 12, and the FWC is holding both Jesse Smith and Capt. Steve Ahlers at fault. Smith, of Port Charlotte, was travelling southwest in a gray 18’ open motorboat. He turned to the south to enter a blind, narrow passage between two mangrove islands when he spotted Ahlers’ yellow boat heading in the opposite direction. Ahlers, of Boca Grande, was traveling northwest towards the same passage, with three passengers on board his 20-foot yellow boat. Read the Full Story

To the Editor:

On Tuesday I attended an “informational meeting” regarding the discontinuation of the after-school program. I was informed we were not there to discuss the Munchkin Program ... why not? The Munchkin Program is as valuable, if not more so, as the afterschool program. I moved to Boca Grande 19 years ago, and I stayed because it was a true community. I have volunteered my time for just about any and all youth-related activities. They are our future and I loved how it takes an island to raise wonderful human beings.

My son is on the Munchkins waiting list. I've been hearing about this magical / miracle program being offered in our community for four years. Now his time has come up to attend the program and we are told it could be axed!

To the Editor:

When I chose to move back into this area from Orlando, I had a huge decision to make for my children on where I felt was best for them. Coming from a place with lots of franchise-run programs, I knew I was looking for more of a personal experience. After looking into The Island School and hearing wonderful stories about the after-school program, I knew this was the perfect location for them. For the first time, my kids ask me to wait 15 more minutes for them to stay.

To the Editor:

After hearing that the after school program was being changed and that Munchkins was being terminated, I attended the informational meeting to receive answers to some of my questions. I can’t say that too many answers were given. Most of the questions were skirted around or simply ignored because if they had been answered it would have been in contradiction to what had already been said. Boca Grande is a very special and unique place for what it offers, not only to the elderly population but to families.

To the Editor:

As a new member of this community, I want to first say how impressed I’ve been with how family oriented Boca Grande is and how wonderful these programs are for the families and children. As a single parent, childcare is a huge focus for me. The after-school program, along with the Fun Days, were a big selling point to me when making the decision to move here just a few weeks ago.

These programs have been so helpful in making my son and I feel at home here and to settle in so easily. It's very upsetting to think that these programs may no longer be available. I can understand looking at cost, especially in this economy, but there are so many other factors involved in making such a decision.

Why wasn't the option mentioned about raising the funds necessary to keep these programs going?

All of this seems to me as though the Friends of Boca no longer care about the future and well-being of our children.
