Read more...At The Island School, Boca Grande firefighters paid the kids a visit to discuss fire safety. Dafne Garcia was impressed to meet one of the guys in full gear. Park Service representative Thelma Proctor also came to the school to discuss our need for clean water.

The Boca Beacon has been running a breakdown of the proposed state amendments prior to the election in November. This is a long ballot, and voters need to be prepared.

This is the second in a three-part series of official summaries of each of the 11 proposed amendments to the state constitution, along with a plain-English explanation of what each amendment would do, who is sponsoring the amendment and what your ‘yes’ or ‘no’ vote will mean.

As some of you may have read in last week's Boca Beacon, the island is experiencing an infestation of spiraling whitefly. This new South Florida insect pest, rugose spiraling whitefly (Aleurodicus rugioperculatus) is evident on almost all of the gumbo limbo and black olive trees along the GICIA Bike Path. It is also on some of the seagrape and many of the coconut palms.
