Read more...BY MARCY SHORTUSE - After DNA samples recently confirmed that a tarpon weighed during a June PTTS tournament was later found dead and gutted, PTTS founder and sponsor Gary Ingman said he is sure his organization had nothing to do with it.

Earlier this week a not-for-profit corporation called Save the Tarpon claimed it had irrefutable DNA proof of the incident. Ingman’s response?

“We can lie detector test any of our people,” he said. “We did not do this. Who knows who found that fish and did something with it. The people responsible who weighed and released the fish, those are the people who I know have nothing to do with that. Whatever happened to that tarpon, I hope it wasn’t done to make people look bad.”

The article posted on savethetarpon.com says that Capt. T.J. Stewart of Team Castaway Charters and Edgewater Boats caught the 124-pound tarpon during the tournament. DNA samples were taken and swabs sent to a laboratory in St. Petersburg.

The tarpon was found floating in the Gulf the next day, on June 4.

BY MARCY SHORTUSE - The game and sport fish designation draft rule proposed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will push forward through the legislative process. This was determined by the FWC Commission at the December 5 meeting in Apalachicola, and brings hope to many traditional tarpon fishermen.

But don’t expect the change in designation to happen any time soon.

BY MARCY SHORTUSE - A special meeting of the Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority meeting was held Thursday afternoon, Dec. 6, to discuss a protest lodged by the low-bidding construction company on the swing bridge project. They also received counsel on how they should proceed in response to the protest.

The bid contract between the bridge authority and the bidders gave them the right to reject the bids unless they, GIBA, acted unfairly or illegally. The board rejected all bids based on the grounds that all bidders gave only a 75 percent completion figure. That was all, at the time, that the board requested.
GLM, the low bidder, contested the rejection saying that it was capricious, and that there was no reason to reject the bid.
